FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON is a 13-episodes behind-the-scenes look at the Apollo space program, focusing not only on the „hardware“ but on the human experience, the individual’s approach to an incredible challenge. The starting point is a statement made by President Kennedy in a speech before congress in 1961: »America should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon.« The viewer is then introduced to the astronauts, scientists and engineers who eventually succeeded in meeting Kennedy’s deadline and winning the space race triggered by the Cold War. The series is based on extensive research and boasts production values – for example special effects – on the scale of a feature film. The seasoned production team includes APOLLO 13 director Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, who initiated the project and also directed the first episode.
