Von Viva in die weite Welt: Minh-Khai Phan-Thi bereist in ihrer ersten Dokumentation das Land ihrer Eltern. Der Film zeigt, dass Away from Viva out into the wide world: in her first documentary, Minh-Khai Phan-Thi visits the land of her parents. The film shows Vietnam as more than the scene of a war from the past – in the middle of the slow transition from communist mismanagement to modern capitalism Vietnam today is split between coming to terms with its past and belief in progress. Phan-Thi is not content, however, with any old mix of travelogue and eulogy to exotic backwardness. The film is at the same time an opportunity to reflect on her own identity. By observing her extended family in Saigon she reflects on what it means to live with two cultures and two languages and therefore with two identities that are in fact one. A fascinating dual portrait of a country undergoing change and a lively biography.
